Outfit and A Mixed Tape: Winter Wonderful

winter wonderful

Ok, so my title for this post is a bit misleading, because I really don't think winter is wonderful.... I hate it actually, but winter clothes are wonderful... I am loving this look.  Rugged on the outside, sleek on the inside.  I first saw these duck boots on Garance via The Sartorialist here.  They are fabulous! Perfect for a winter wonderful ensemble.  Here is the mix.

p.s. I may have eluded to the fact that this outfit and mix would be modeled by me. I haven't abandoned the Idea of showing you what I wear, but I may just feature it all on it's own.  It's coming I promise!

Exciting News

Hello!  I realized yesterday I didn't post an outfit and mix tape last week tsk tsk! This is not my exciting news....but I will be posting one later on today.  I have been on a creative sewing wave for the last three weeks, so sadly the blog has suffered a little.  But this week I am dedicating myself to the blog and my Etsy shop.  I have some great new things coming to the shop, very excited.... this is also  not the exciting news.  So by now you are probably saying "well get to it already!!!"

OK so here it is.  If you live in Oshawa or the area come stop by my pop-up shop co hosted by PTAKapparel my pal Deb makes beautiful eco-friendly clothing and accessories that she will also be selling.  The event will be at Isabella's Chocolate Cafe, and we will have a musical guest, miss L-A Clark.  It's going to be loads of fun!  I know most of you do not live in my town, but I thought I would share this anyway to let you know what I'm up to.  So at the very least you can enjoy the poster Deb and I designed last night.  See you back here later today! xo

Thrift Score: Old Magazines

Last night I went on an impromptu thrift trip ( I needed a break from all the mall shopping and conventional retail outlets I have been to this week).  The drop in proved to be fruitful.  I found some great vintage stuff and one of my more exciting purchases were three magazines from the '40's and '50's.  In pretty good shape to boot.   Clayton and I had a good time leafing through them, and I was thrilled to find some amazing images and ads of ladies and gents in all their vintage glory.  So I thought I would share some of my favourite Images from the magazines.  I wish there were more colour pictures in the mags, but hey it was the '40's!  Hopefully you enjoy these images and outfits as much as I do!

The three magazines are Chatelaine, Look (from April 1940), and Spot

I think this is my favourite image out of all of them.  Maybe it's the colour of her outfit or the red lips or both.

Love the print on this outfit.  Not sure if it's really for tennis or just a bathing suite.  Fabulous all the same!

Pretty bow.  I love her overall look

I'd love to see this dress in colour

Beautiful shoes!

The fact that these shoes match this outfit perfectly makes me so excited.  I know matchy matchy is bad, but this is epic

Hello friends!  I myself am not American, but I can pretend.  So in the spirit of pretending, I'm offering up 10% off everything in The Vintage Ramble Etsy shop starting tonight until tomorrow at 12:00am. Use the cupon code "Rambling" to take advantage of the savings!
Happy Thanksgiving !! xoxo

The Hemming and Hawing Continues

So I mentioned last week in my outfit and a mixed tape post that I was contemplating doing some outfit posts of myself in my clothes from my closet..... well I still haven't made up my mind.  There is a lot to consider I guess and I just want to make sure that it is the right direction for my blog.....So I'm speaking openly about it, so that maybe I can get feedback from some of you who may already do outfit posts, or from you others who may have an opinion on it.  I'm also writing about it to process my thoughts more clearly, so bare with me.

Here is the deal.  My day job is such that I get to work from home (lucky me!) so this means that I could potentially work in my pj's all day (which I don't) but it also means that I really don't have to try that hard to put together a really cute outfit for the day.  I mean really the only other person in my office is a bobble head sitting on my desk.  I'm not really into impressing plastic figurines.  So usually I just end up wearing whatever I muster up on the floor or the first thing sticking out my closet.  This factor is not really helping me much when I want to show all you lovely people my nice clothes.

The other weighty issue for me is getting in front of the camera. I went to film school to learn how to be behind a camera not in front of one. So thinking about posing and looking fresh and cute in pictures seems frightening to me.
Seeing these arguments in print is making me think that I'm looking for every excuse not to do this, but really I just need to suck it up and do it!  I'm at least going to give it a try, and at least now you have some things to consider if my pictures/outfits turn out badly.... stay tuned, and thanks for listening!

Gilt Vintage

If you are already familiar with Gilt Groupe, you will know that it is a fashion junkies safe haven.  High end beautiful clothing, accessories, and housewares at drastically reduced prices.  It's genius really.  I haven't bought anything on Gilt yet, but I'm waiting for that perfect Marc Jacobs coat to one day appear and for my bank account to be ready to buy the coat for me.....

As I was browsing the site today, I cam across these great vintage fashion sketches framed and ready to hang.  Here are some of my favourites.

It was a nice surprise to find vintage pieces on Gilt today. Hope they keep up the trend.  I will likely become a regular shopper if that's the case....

Outfit And a Mixed Tape

55

So I am toying with the idea of being the model for next week's outfit and a mixed tape. I'm still not sure how I feel about publishing a picture of myself (I'm camera shy). I'm a little curious to see how it would turn out, but mostly I want to put together an outfit with some of the stuff in my closet that I never get to wear. So I guess you'll have to wait until next week to see what I decide to do..... for now enjoy today's outfit and mixed tape. Check out the mix here.

Thrifting ROCKS.

I have a question for all you avid thrifters out there.  Do you ever pick up an amazing find and then stumble upon a similar item on your next thrift trip when it seems like these objects never surface and all of a sudden they are everywhere?  Well this is what has been happening to me lately....The object....  Mineral jewelry!  I covet the stuff on Etsy especially from Dinosaur Toes but never got around to purchasing any, then all of a sudden on almost every thrift trip recently I have stumbled upon these gems (pun intended!)

So today I'm sharing with you my growing collection of mineral jewelry.  Hopefully my luck doesn't run out past this blog post and I can find more to put in the shop.  Sadly (for you, not me) I can't part with these beauties just yet, but I promise to add some to the shop if I find more.

p.s. Next time your on Etsy check out my friends shop Ptakapparel. One of a kind designer goodness!

Style Muse: Denise Huxtable aka Lisa Bonet aka Lilakoi Moon

I can confidently assume that the majority of you out there have seen the Cosby show, and would hope that the majority of you would agree that Denise Huxtable was pretty fabulous.... I know that when I was young enough to form any opinion about style and fashion I knew that Denise had the wickedest style around, and probably in a very primary kid like way, I would try to emulate that look.

When I researched Denise's look a little more, I realized that not only does Denise have great style, but so does Lisa Bonet (who now goes by Lilakoi Moon).  Not only is she a natural beauty, but she really knows how to dress in a unique way that enhances her assets.  It is a sort of Rastafarian flower child with a little bit of a western influence.  And we can't forget one of the coolest aspects of the way Denise/Lisa/Lilakoi dresses....LAYERS!  That was one thing I always tried to pull of (but couldn't)  layering.  Flowy stuff over tight stuff or shirt tales pocking out of a big grandpa sweater....

To top off the clothes the hair and makeup were always subtle and natural.  I'm always drawn to that look and try to achieve it in my everyday way of dressing.  Don't get me wrong I like to put on makeup and look totally fab once and a while but even that has it's limits.... Keep it simple I guess is what I'm trying to say.

All in all I still admire Denise's clothes and still try to go for these looks when I dress.  I can't resist the laid back look of sportswear reinterpreted.  Cool and comfortable.  I live by it!

Outfit and A Mixed Tape

***

Here is this week's outfit and a mixed tape.  I've been thinking of a fun Friday night outfit and this is the look I'm thinking of.  The mix is sort of along the same lines as the outfit. I guess I'm just in a laid back kind of mood this week.  Here is the mix

New In The Shop

Bags and shoes!  The shop now has a healthy addition of accessories.  There are many more to come, so this is just the beginning.  I am trying to pace myself with all the new shop additions.  I have put a lot aside for my Etsy collection, so keep checking the shop.  Hope you enjoy!

Spare Parts

The other night I pulled out my box of broken jewelry parts and shiny things and started to play.  Here is what I came up with.....

I made these for a very special store opening this week.  The store will feature hand made, eco-friendly local designs.  I am so excited for a shop like this to open in my area!

All of these necklaces were made with broken jewelery parts. I could spend hours making these necklaces.  I love them!  Clayton has named them my Frankenstein necklaces.  Frankenstein has never looked so pretty!

Happiness is....

Came across this great post on the Market Publique blog.  Not only does this make me nostaligic for the 90's and the hours I used to spend watching much music (when they still played music videos) but I can also really relate to the point about how the unexpected little things can be the best things in life.  It really is true that finding that unexpected treasure at the thrift store can be so thrilling and joyful.  What was your last great thrift score?

Shop Update

Hello ramble friends!  I've added a few new things to the shop.  I have so many other goodies to add, I just need to find time!  Hope you enjoy the new additions...
